Health Tips

  1. Most herbs and dietary supplements are not safe to take during pregnancy or lactation. (Even many that are normally safe.)
  2. Foods to avoid during pregnancy and lactation. (Not a complete list.) Eggplant, tomato sauce, tonic water or quinine, hydrogenated fats, liver, high-mercury fish (swordfish, shark, king mackeral, tilefish), caffeine, alcohol.
  3. Dietary supplements to avoid during pregnancy and lactation. (Not a complete list.) Avoid most herbs (except mild ginger tea is safe), retinol vitamin A (moderate beta carotene is safe), cod liver oil, iron pills, anything hormone related, any "fat blocker" or "sugar blocker" (CLA, chitosan, garcinia, etc.), high-dose oil soluble vitamins (E, D or K), high-dose garlic, high-dose antioxidants.
  4. Iron is important but it is risky to take iron supplements. It is better to take vegetables that contain iron such as chlorella.
  5. Please note that some of the supplements on this page are not specifically labeled for children or mothers. Please ask your doctor first.
